100 Perfect Albums NOT included on the Apple Music list
Apple Music published their 100 Best Albums of All Time list today, we offer some alternates here in the form of a playlist, of course
Gotta give kudos to Apple Music on a great rollout of their controversial list of the 100 Best Albums of All Time, they’ve managed to get the entire internet talking about a list that’s nearly impossible to assemble. By rolling out the list ten albums at a time, Pitchfork-style, they’ve kept everyone guessing and arguing about who made it on the list and who didn’t. Music fans on Twitter seem particularly upset that Channel Orange and Phoebe Bridgers didn’t make the cut (both of those are on our list!).
There are certain genres that are severely under-represented on the original Apple list, most notably country music (I’m only really seeing ONE country album on the list), dance music (again, only ONE on the list), metal, jazz, blues, punk, classic new wave / alternative and any international music that isn’t from the UK. The most controversial choice was probably their #1 album, which was Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill from 1998 — the album is admittedly a masterpiece and had a huge influence on almost all mainstream hip hop / R&B that followed. It’s a bold choice, since most of these lists are topped by something super safe like Pet Sounds or Stevie Wonder / Marvin Gaye or The Beatles.
I thought it would be fun to assemble a list of 100 albums that DID NOT make it on the Apple Music list, but are still considered to be classic / perfect, ten out of ten albums — just to show how impossible it is to compile lists like these in the first place. One caveat here, these are not my personal picks for the 100 Best Albums of all time, and they are in no particular order (not ranked). I’m guessing you’re going to be shocked when you see some of the albums that got left out, I mean just for starters, there’s Loveless, Slanted & Enchanted, If You’re Feeling Sinister, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, 69 Love Songs, Doolittle, The Soft Bulletin and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.
Lemme know your picks for albums that I missed in the comments!
so much better! I know these lists are subjective and somewhat pointless. Other than to call out, “Look how cool I am.” The total lack of indie albums in the original Apple list was quite galling. as much as I like Young Marble Giants, I’m not sure I would include them in my list, but that is minor quibbling. Now I know what I’ll be listening to on my next several dog walks.
